A scalar beam propagation model is used to simulate the coupling of a laser diode to a cylindrically lensed fiber end face and to investigate how coupling depends on the divergence angle of the laser, the lens radius, the lens wedge angle, and the centration of the lens on the fiber core. Numerical simulations are used to relate lens geometry to experimentally measured far field patterns emitted from small radius (R=4-5 μm) cylindrical lenses on SMF-28 fiber at λ = 1550 nm.
