FIELD TRIAL WITH INMODULEN~(R) ON A FARM INFECTED WITH CIRCOVIRUS (PCV-2)

Swine circovirus is a recently described illness, which affects pigs in post-weaning and in the fattening stage. This is caused by a type 1 (PCV-2) Circovirus, and the incidence has been on the increase in Europe during the last few years. Inmodulen~(R) is a biological immunotherapeutic which combines the properties of Propionibacterium granulosum and a short chain lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of E. coll, which, when detected by monocytes and macrophages, activates the immune cellular cascade provoking the secretion of different cytokines. As a complementary action, LPS is also capable of adhering to B-lymphocytes of different families and, in this way, it stimulates the polyclonal production of antibodies. The objective of the trial was to study the effect of the application of Inmodulen~(R), together with the Aujeszky's disease vaccination, on the reduction of mortality in pigs on a farm affected by swine circovirus.
