LACTATION PROBLEMS IN SOWS: NEW TRIALS AND DATA CONCERNING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SYSTEMATIC USE OF FLUNIXIN MEGLUMINE POST-FARROWING

Current swine production is carried out under management conditions that try to minimise the non productive days and to maximise the rotation of the facilities and therefore increase sow productivity. But sometimes management conditions and the facilities are inadequate or stress the sows, affecting their productivity. Lactation problems can be classified, according to their intensity, in hypoglactia and agalactia. In previous trials, the administration of a dose of Flunixin meglumine produced an improvement of the daily piglet weight gain of 12 to 19 grams and an improvement of the litter weight at weaning of more than 5 - 6 kg, in hybrid sows and in selection sows respectively. Accordingly, a new trial was carried out to verify the results obtained previously (1 farm with hypogalactia), and the effect on productivity of a treatment for agalactia was evaluated in 2 additional farms.
