The humoral response of pigs against L. intracellularis infection has been shown to be weak and short-lived (3). The longest detected duration of serum antibodies against L. intracellularis in pigs was less than 2 months (4). Cell-mediated immune response is an important feature involved in infection caused by intracellular organisms (1). The ELISPOT T-cell assay that detects the secretion of interferon-gamma (IFN-y) by memory or activated T-lymphocytes can be used to evaluate the T-helper 1 responseon the single-cell level (6). No information is available about the roles of cell-mediated immune response against L. intracellularis. The objective of this study was to investigate the onset and duration of the cell-mediated and humoral immune responses in experimentally challenged or vaccinated pigs.
