Stiffened cylindrical shells are major components of aerospace structures. An analytical model using the smeared stiffener method is developed for calculating the universal buckling load of a geodesically stiffened composite cylinder. A unit cell is first defined that represents the whole stiffened panel. Force and moment analysis is performed on the unit cell to derive the equivalent extensional, coupling and bending (A, B, and D) matrices of the stiffened shell. The energy method is then used to calculate the buckling load of the equivalent orthotropic shell. Buckling load calculations are performed on an isogrid stiffened composite cylinder and the results obtained are compared with previous finite elements results. Based on these comparisons the reliability of the model is established.
