Sarcoptic mange is one of the most widespread parasitic diseases of swine worldwide. In particular, intensively raised, large-scale herds tend to be severely affected. Economic losses due to mange have been estimated in many countries where intensivepig farming is practiced (1, 2). Some of these countries have developed a mange eradication program combining implementation of treatment of herds with Ivomec~R (Merial Limited, Duluth, GA) with a slaughterhouse monitoring system.Monitoring of average dermatitis score (ADS) in slaughterhouses can provide feedback to individual herds. ADS at slaughter, based on the presence and severity of papular dermatitis caused by subclinical mange (1), has a very high correlation with mange infestation in the herd.
