COMPARISON OF TWO METHODS OF MEASUREMENT OF BODY TEMPERATURE IN PIG: RECTAL AND SUBCUTANEOUS TEMPERATURE

The measurement of animal body temperatures is an important part of clinical examination in pig, but it is a time-consuming, sometimes stressing manipulation. Other methods can be less stressing and easier. This paper evaluates the interest of the useof subcutaneous transponders. Two methods of measurement of temperature were compared: the use of a digital medical thermometer (rectal temperature) and transponder implantation (subcutaneous temperature). A study was performed on healthy pigs (averageweight 81.4 kg), after fever induction by double dose injection of a vaccine.
