RETROSPECTIVE STUDY USING IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY ON PRRSV-INDUCED PNEUMONIA IN THAILAND

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a major cause of porcine respiratory disease complex (4). PRRSV infection is now endemic in many swine-producing countries including Thailand (6). Interstitial pneumonia caused by PRRSV infection is more potent in young pigs and usually complicated by secondary bacterial infection. PRRSV infection in weaned and nursery pigs is recognized by increase in postweaning mortality from 1-2% to 10-15% (3). There are several causes of interstitialpneumonia including PRRSV, swine influenza, porcine paramyxovirus, and salmonella septicemia in pigs (5). PRRSV has been reported in Thailand since 1989 (2). However, the prevalence and incidence has not been clearly elucidated. In this report, we investigated the correlation of interstitial pneumonia and the presence of PRRSV antigen by immunohistochemistry.
