The primary diagnosis of spirochetal colitis, infection caused by Brachyspira (B.) pilosicoli, can be performed using phenotypical techniques, but a definitive species identification usually requires a DNA-based analysis, such as amplification of genesequences through PCR (1). Serological assays can be used, and are specially important as a tool for vaccine development. The microagglutination test showed a high level of consistency and sensitivity in the identification of antibodies against B. hyodysenteriae (2), and there are no studies on this technique to detect antibodies against B, pilosicoli. The present work was designed to assess homologous and heterologous reaction of a serum produced against the type strain of B. pilosicoli, using the microscopic agglutination test.
