CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS AFTER CHALLENGE WITH ACTINOBACILLUS PLEUROPNEUMONIAS SEROTYPE 2

Disease caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (Ap) has a great impact on animal welfare and production economy in Danish pig herds. Approximately 60% of the strains isolated at DVI belong to serotype 2. The purpose of the present investigation wasto study the relation between clinical symptoms and pathological lesions after intranasal inoculation of Ap serotype 2. Two Ap serotype 2 field strains (4226 and 4096) were grown overnight on PPLO agar, resuspended in 0.9% NaCl, adjusted to McFarland standards 1 and 10, and mixed 1:1 with Brain Heart Infusion broth (BHI). A one-hour-old suspension was used for inoculation of the pigs. In a pilot study, doses of l-2xl06 CFU in 0.9% NaCl had been used.
