The Danish SPF-swine program was set up in 1968, and it nowadays consists of about 3,500 herds, and produce 80% of all replacement-breeding animals and 25% of slaughterer pigs in Denmark. Unfortunately, SPF-swine herds are vulnerable to re-infection with the specific pathogens, such as Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (Ap). All genetic SPF-swine herds are inspected clinically and screened serologically once a month for infection of Ap serotype2 (Ap2) in the program. The veterinarians from Danish Bacon& Meat Council (DBMC) are responsible for clinical surveillance in the herds. 10 or 20 blood samples according to the number of sows in the herds (1) are collected, and a polyclonal blocking ELISA (2) is used for demonstration of antibodies against Ap2at the laboratory of DBMC, Roskilde. The objective of this study was to evaluate potential risk factors for Ap2 infection in the genetic SPF herds in order to suggest possible improvements in farm management.
