COMPATIBILITY ANALYSIS BETWEEN GSM AND UMTS IN ADJACENT BANDS USING A MONTE CARLO-BASED SIMULATION TOOL

摘要

The development of second generation mobile communication systems like GSM and the future growth of third generation systems like UMTS are dependent upon the identification of extension frequency bands to meet the expected market demand. Improving the efficiency of the spectrum utilization and sharing is a key challenge faced by today's telecommunication market players. This paper presents and discusses the compatibility study between UMTS and GSM cellular systems in adjacent frequency bands (DCS1800 and PCS1900). Meantime, the merits of the Monte Carlo-based methodology in respect of radio systems coexistence assessment and assistance in the generation of both system specifications and spectrum utilization recommendations are addressed.
