Aerial photos and satellite images display and reveal the landscape structure in a particularly descriptive and clear way. State-of-the-art image analysis methods can be used to evaluate the structural information in these images. Knowledge based methods of image analysis try to simulate the interpretation and reasoning of a human expert interpreter. The conceptual framework for knowledge-based analysis of remotely sensed images with special attention to the link to ecologic process modeling is presented. This framework is also intended to form the basis for the use of graph-theoretical methods as described in other papers to this workshop. Research in the analysis of landscape structure from remotely sensed images not only results in techniques that produce information from images for assessment and monitoring purposes faster and more objective than by visual interpretation. A main outcome of this type of research is also insight into the theory of landscape ecology and thus an increase of landscape-ecological knowledge.
