'NEARCHOS' an Educational CD-ROM on the Interaction of Materials and the Environment

An educational interactive CD-ROM has been designed and executed with the purpose of correlating the properties of structural materials in their service environment. The program is based on a authoring tool platform. The user student or professional engineer ask for the material of interest from a list in the screen, which includes all known engineering materials and at the same time the required service environment. The environment can be either marine, urban, industrial or a combination of marine-industrial. Then the user will find on the screen, either the general theory, if he/she so chooses, or a more detailed one, of the corrosion of the material in the specified environment with photographs, tables, and diagrams that have been inserted by the writer. He/she can also took at testing standards, relating to the materials in general. The database is enriched progressively. The CD-ROM includes music and help. The name of the CD-ROM belongs to the admiral of Alexander the Great who exploded the Indian Ocean.
