Bioactive bone substitution materials always contain calcium phosphates (CP) in order to achieve osseointegration. Commercially available materials are natural bone mineral matrix and synthetic CP. Hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate ceramics are the most widely used synthetic CP in maxillofacial surgery and orthopedics. The rationale for the development of a rapidly resorbable material based on Ca{sub}2KNa(PO{sub}4){sub}2 was that these glass-ceramics are known to possess a higher solubility than tricalcium phosphate ceramics [1 - 3]. In the past an excellent growth was observed for human osteoblast-like cells on natural three-dimensional structures that are produced from porous natural bone mineral [4] as well as for human bone marrow cells on porous hydroxyapatite ceramics [5]. The present study should investigate the bio-compatibility of the newly developed sponge-like resorbable bioceramics in a three-dimensional bone cell culture system.
