摘要

Among the strategies to repair damaged or diseased articular cartilage is the cultivation in vitro, of isolated chondrocytes on materials to be used as substrata for tissue regeneration. Although calcium phosphate-based materials have been studied extensively in bone repair applications, little has been reported with respect to the use of such materials in the repair of the cartilaginous compartment, specifically the interaction of isolated primary chondrocytes with calcium phosphate-based materials. Furthermore, the effects of ceramic pore size and initial cell seeding density on cartilaginous tissue formation has also not yet been systematically studied. It was the objective of this study to evaluate the ability of these materials to support the attachment of chondrocytes, and to examine their potential to support and maintain chondrogenesis under different cell seeding, pore size and ceramic degradation conditions in vitro.
