Benefits of Central Tire Inflation Systems for Agricultural Vehicles

The weight of agricultural vehicles continues to increase so they can pull implements that are larger in size. As the weight of the vehicles increase, compaction of the soil increases as well, causing reduced yields and reduced profitability. Central Tire Inflation Systems (CTIS) were developed to increase traction while reducing compaction by allowing increased contact of the tire with the ground. In addition, the increased deflection improves the ride of the vehicle. This research presents data collected for ride, traction, and compaction on a CaseIH 8950 Magnum tractor equipped with a central tire inflation system. The CTIS improved the ride of the vehicle 99% on average, and 177% over properly inflated tires when not in resonance. The data showed a 2% increase in power delivery efficiency (this translates to a 5% increase in fuel economy). The CTIS also reduced rut depths by 10% and reduced the cone index in the top 15 cm (6 in) of soil.
