The human genome project is nearing completion, and whole human genome sequences will be determined next year. But, determination of all the genome sequences does not imply detection of all the genes and gene structures because the determination of exon-intron structures by prediction is not perfect. In order to obtain accurate gene structures and promoter information, full-length cDNA sequence information is fundamental. Furthermore, full-length cDNA clones and sequences are vital for functional analysis of genes. The oligo-capping cDNA library developed by Maruyama and Sugano is an effective source of full-length enriched cDNA clones. Full-length human cDNA sequencing project supported by New Energy and Industrial Technology Developmental Organization (NEDO) that started in April 1999 has determined 30,000 full-length human cDNA sequences of oligo-capping clones obtained at Helix Research Institute, Tokyo University, and Kazusa DNA Research Institute by March in 2002. 21,243 cDNA sequences of those are published in DDBJ with FLJ number.
