Combined MEG and EEG Source Imaging of Interictal Activity in Partial Epilepsy

High-temporal-resolution brain mapping of interictal MEG and EEG generators can help unveil the spatio-temporal dynamics of epileptogenic networks in partial epilepsy. This article briefly illustrates the basic steps taken in our investigation of spatio-temporal properties of the generators of surface interictal spikes from concurrent MEG and EEG recordings. We discuss the issues related to the identification of activated regions from time-evolving maps of cortical current density from MEG, EEG and fusion between MEG and EEG. While we promote the exploitation of concurrent MEG and EEG recordings in a joint inverse problem, we also discuss a source imaging strategy on a pool of unaveraged spikes for a better characterization of the intrinsic variability of interictal patterns in a given patient.
