Immediate consequences for the Spanish anesthesiaof the visit of Sir Robert Macintoshto Spain in 1937

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the American surgeon Joseph Eastmann Sheehan (Fig. 1), at the request of General Franco, attended a number of patients with facial injuries. It was through the offices of the Duke of Alba that Eastmann Sheehan visited Spain to collaborate with General Franco's troops. Finding Spain to be very backward in the field of anaesthesia, he called on his Oxford colleague Robert R. Macintosh (Fig. 2) to help out. Macintosh and his collaborator K. Boston (who later substituted for him) spent some 6 weeks in Spain [1-4].
