This paper presents an acceleration parameter study of the 1999 Athens earthquake and discusses their capability to describe the seismic damage potential. Moreover, the investigated parameters of the Athens earthquake are being compared to those, provided by the accelerograms recorded in different regions in Greece with strong seismic activity. The attention is focussed on engineering seismic parameters, like the Arias intensity, the cumulative absolute velocity, the strong motion duration, the spectral intensities, the seismic power and the effective peak acceleration. For the strong motion duration the definitions after Trifunac/Brady and the 0.05g bracketed duration have been used. Furthermore, for the spectral intensities the definitions after Housner, Hidalgo/Clough and Nau/Hall in their authentic and in a modified version have been used. As the analysis has shown, the seismic parameters of the Athens earthquake exhibit a great dispersion in the results. It has been observed both, low and high numerical values for all the examined engineering parameters, due to the different geological conditions. In comparison with other Greek seismic excitations, the seismic parameters provided by the Athens earthquake are of medium severity. The destructive consequences may be attributed firstly to the proximity of the epicentre to the urban area and secondly to the relatively high vulnerability of the structures.
