Landing gear is one of the most critical components in an aircraft. Being an important aero-structural component, the mechanical strength of landing gears needs to be ascertained by subjecting them to different combinations of loads. As a means of approving the design of nose and main landing gears of a particular aircraft, static strength test was conducted as per the qualification test schedule. The landing gears were instrumented with strain gages and dial gages at various critical locations to obtain the structural response under loading. The required loads in multi-axial direction were created using hydraulic jacks mounted on suitable steel frames, pedestals and vertical columns, which were anchored to the heavy-duty test floor. This paper describes the details of instrumentation, test set-up, procedure of testing and measurement of response of nose and main landing gears during static strength test.
