Increasing knowledge of how to make use of interactions between existing and new flame retardant additives enables material developers to improve material performance and reduce costs. Recent studies evaluating the performance of different synthetically made zinc borates Firebrake~® ZB,(2ZnO· 3B_2O_3· 3,5H_2O),Firebrake~®500(2ZnO· 3B_2O_3)and Firebrake~® 415(4ZnO· B_2O_3· H_2O)in metal hydroxide flame retardant polyolefins and in halogenated FR nylons have shown that useful new combinations of material properties can be obtained. A number of examples will highlight how to utilize the different modes of interaction of zinc borates with other flame retardant additives.
