An experimental setup of the sonar transducer using Terfenol-D rod under open magnetic circuit was studied in this work. Normally sonar transducer using Terfenal-D is designed under closed magnetic flux return path. For high sound power, high magnetic field should be applied to the transducer coil, and it brings temperature increase inside of the transducer. To improve this heat dissipation problem, we have designed the open magnetic circuit type transducer and we can get 200 dB (re. 1 μPa at 1m ) sound power for input power of 650 VA.
