High beta experiments with a high aspect ratio can be performed in FTU (Frascati Tokamak Upgrade) with plasmas characterized by high elongation and triangularity. For these configurations the vertical instability growth rate is of the order of 500-1,000 s{sup}(-1). In this paper we show that these configurations can be achieved with the existing poloidal field coil system and stabilized with a new feedback control system.
