We have investigated a new phosphor thin-film structure for electroluminescent (EL) devices. In this thin-film structure, fine particles of SrS:Ce are buried in a ZnS layer. We have observed EL emissions of blue-green to bluish-green from the thin-films, with the color depending on the thin-film structure and the annealing temperature. X-ray diffraction patterns and EL spectra indicate that nanometer-scale SrS:Ce phosphor particles (< 50 nm) were distributed throughout the ZnS layer without cohesion. We achieved this by creating a multi-layer structure of alternating SrS:Ce-buried ZnS layers and ZnS layers.
