A full assessment of the residual stress state in a shot-peened part requires measuring a residual stress depth profile. The most commonly used methods for this are probably x-ray diffraction (XRD) and hole drilling with strain gages. A newer technique combines hole drilling with an optical measurement, Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI). It is here compared to XRD and differences between the methods are discussed.
