This paper describes micro-meter crack response technology employed to assess the degree of conservatism in current vibration control limits. Probabilistic studies and scientific observation show that the probability of cosmetic or threshold cracking is zero with vibratory excitation below 12 mm/s (0.5 ips). This is true even for low frequency (4-12 Hz) excitation. Micro-meter crack response data from over 30 cracks substantiate that conclusion and provide an explanation.
