Effects of Glass Waste Addition on Technological Properties of Porcelain Stoneware Tiles

The aim of this research is to assess the effects of the addition of waste soda-lime glass on both technological behaviour and technical properties of porcelain stoneware bodies. Several bodies were experimented adding up to 10% waste (float and container glass), in replacement of sodium feldspar, to a typical industrial formulation. Tiles were prepared at a laboratory scale through wet grinding, dry pressing, fast drying and fast firing at various maximum temperatures (1120-1180°C). Fired and unfired samples were characterized from the technological and microstructural viewpoints. Furthermore, phase and chemical composition of stoneware were determined as well as viscosity and surface tension of the glassy phase. Both glass-free and glass-bearing samples exhibit similar properties of semi-finished products. On the other hand, the presence of glass changed the sintering behaviour and reduced the mechanical performance of tiles.
