Nano-sized iron (III) oxide particles were fabricated by a combustion flame process. The size and the crystalline phase of the particles collected at various heights along the burner centerline were determined. Well crystallized maghemite particles with an average particle size of 20 nm were synthesized at heights ranging from 20 to 35 mm, while the particles collected at heights of 44 mm and higher proved to be hematite with an average particle size of 3-5 nm. Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) studies confirmed that both γ andα-Fe_2O_3 nanoparticles exhibited good Superparamagnetic properties with blocking temperatures of 250 K and 68 K, respectively.
