This paper deals with a detailed experimental analysis of cold start-up procedures for a once-through heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and the simulation of the experiments. The test rig for the experiments is a 1 MW h HRSG with horizontal tubes in counter current configuration at the Institute of Thermal Power Systems, Technische Universitat Miinchen. The simulation was ran with the Program "DYNAPLANT" developed by Siemens Power Generation. The experiments represent the cold start-up of a once-through HRSG in a combined cycle power plant. The boundary conditions correspond to a gas turbine start-up from standstill to part-load condition. The simulation focuses on predicting the water, steam and wall temperatures, the amount of water carry over and also on representing clearly the physical phenomena observed. Two cold start-up experiments are presented in this paper: One where the evaporator and economiser tubes are completely full of water and a second where only a part of the evaporator is filled with water in order to minimise the water carry over to the separator. In both experiments useful results are obtained in respect to the occurring phenomena. For the first case the amount and the progression of the water swell and the carry over to the separator are represented very accurately. In the second case the important events within the evaporator are properly reproduced, although some explainable deviations in the water carry over are noticed. A Comparison between experiment and simulation showed that the simulation program "DYNAPLANT" is fully applicable to once-through HRSG design and analysis.
