The quality of atomization achieved by the oil atomizer nozzle has an immediate influence on overall combustion performance. However, the relationship between the oil nozzle's atomization quality and the resulting combustion performance is not well understood. This paper investigates the effect of atomization quality of an oil nozzle on combustion performance. The results show that good atomization reduces flame length, increases turndown ratio, lowers particulate emission, but increases NO_x emissions and consumption of the atomizing medium. The paper also compares two different designs of oil atomizers: the traditional design designated MEA and the new design designated HERO. The studies show that precise atomization design can achieve all the desired aspects of good combustion, namely: low atomizing medium consumption, low NOx emissions, short flame lengths, high turndown ratios, and low particulate emission.
