Developing Tram-Train systems Technical issues on track sharing (NL situation)

Each an every country has its own historical background in the development of railways for more than 150 years. For a long time standardisation was only an issue for international traffic, mainly coaches and cargo trains. In heavy rail traffic each country developed its own standard. In the last few decades of the last century several developments of light rail operation on existing track in Europe took place. Development of lightrailsystems with heavy rail track sharing in the Netherlands is subject of studies for about 10 years. The technical issues on track sharing in the Netherlands differ from other countries because of the historical development. Also the extensive use of the track is an important parameter in the safety discussion. This influences the technical discussion also. In this presentation I will explain the situation in the Netherlands. What are the specific questions that need to be solved concerning track sharing in the Netherlands.
