The patterning of cardiac myocytes on a micron scale was achieved by microcontact printing (μCP) of fibronectin (FN) onto a hydrophobically pretreated glass sbstrate. The patterned myocytes conjugated with each other by forming a gap junction, as judged from synchronized Ca~(2+) transient over the pattern, and thus simultaneously contracted. Furthermore, it was shown the chemical stimulus with 1-octanol rapidly and reversibly decreased the activity of gap junctional communication of the patterned myocytes. The patterning of cardiac myocytes on an indium tin oxide (ITO) microelectrode array was also attempted for developing novel bioassay devices.
