A defect of glass after machining was discussed. A soda-lime glass was machined by abrasions with variable size, and diamond wheel with no.80 in some kinds of cutting fluid, such as atmosphere, water and spindle oil. The defect was estimated through deterioration of fracture stress by 4 point bending test. The effect of surface roughness on fracture stress was discussed in some environments. Water causes the decrease of the stress, but spindle oil increases the stress. Machining in water gives lager deterioration of the fracture stress than that in spindle oil. Water free cutting fluid is beneficial for decreasing the defect and/or the fracture stress in machining.
