Erosion wear of the ceramic nozzles in sand blasting treatments

Sandblasting nozzle is the main wear-resistant element of sand blasting equipment. Ceramics being with high wear resistance have great potentials as the sand blasting nozzle materials. In this paper, monolithic B{sub}4C and Al{sub}2O{sub}3/(W,Ti)C ceramic composites were developed as nozzle materials. The erosion wear of B{sub}4C and Al{sub}2O{sub}3/(W,Ti)C ceramic nozzles was investigated. Results show that the B{sub}4C nozzle had a lower erosion rate than Al{sub}2O{sub}3/(W,Ti)C nozzle under conditions, when three abrasives such as SiC white Al{sub}2O{sub}3 and brown Al{sub}2O{sub}3 are used. The results also suggested that the greater the hardness of abrasives, the more volume loss of the sand blasting nozzle. Increasing the ratio of the hardness of abrasive to the nozzle resulted in a dramatic increase in the erosion rate, mainly when the ratio was in the range of unity. The monolithic B{sub}4C nozzles exhibited a brittle fracture induced removal process, while the Al{sub}2O{sub}3/(W,Ti)C nozzles showed mainly a plowing type of material removal mode.
