In Japan, research and development were done to enhance eddy current inspection capability for the steam generator tubes in pressurized water-type nuclear power plants. In connection with this activity, the Japan Society of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics proposed benchmark problems simulating the steam generator tube inspection for the development and validation of 3-D eddy current codes for eddy current response predictions, and for the improvement of measurement methods. This paper presents the benchmark problems definition and a couple of finite element formulations, and comparisons between the experimental and numerical predictions showing that the finite element formulations give satisfactory solutions, and also test specimens for a round-robin test of eddy current inspections.
