A portable GPS-based device was developed for mapping large areas with enhanced radioactivity. It is intended for use in difficultly accessible areas, typically for foot campaigns. Standard low cost components were used, such as a wireless GPS receiver, and a wireless RS-232 device connecting a handheld Nal detector to a pocket PC (PPC). The PPC is programmed to perform simple data logging, producing a file with position and dose rate in situ, which must be post processed in the office to map the contamination.
