The new IRLS algorithm developed by Burrus, Barreto and Selesnick is used in the paper to obtain linear phase FIR filters analogous to all equiripple classical IIR filter types. The original procedure gives the equivalent of an Elliptic (Cauer) IIR filter. FIR filters analogous to classical type I and II Chebyshev IIR filters are obtained by applying the IRLS algorithm to a special filter structure proposed by Vaidyanathan. This approach that does not use explicitly linear constraints on derivatives as in [3] gives rapid convergence and very robust designs eliminating the ill-conditioned cases specific for the linear programming methods.
