A pilot study of herbaceous fuels in Central Portugal

A pilot study carried out between 1995 and 2002 on the annual growth of herbaceous vegetation along a public Motorway in Portugal is presented. Eight plots were sampled once a year in late Spring. The height of the vegetation, its load and percentage of dead material was evaluated. Correlation between these parameters, an average value of the Drought Code (DC) and the total area burned in the Portugal in the same year was found to exist.
