Renewable Energy for Local Communities of Europe (Toward Rio + 10)

This work intends to deal with the analysis of social contexts and cultural factors related to the issue of energy production through renewable sources. The aim is to examine causes and possible developments of a clearly different model compared to that prevailing in centralised production and top-down distribution. In fact, now there is the prospect of a radical reversal of the prevailing energy paradigm, due to the diffusion of new technologies based upon local-scale generators, operated by renewable sources such as solar energy. This change can cut down decisively CO{sub}2 emissions from present levels generated by conventional systems. The working hypothesis is based upon the assumption that a useful policy of environmental protection must be characterised by the adoption of a new model in which the aspect of technological innovation is strictly linked with the value of local dimension.
