DESIGN OF FIXED TYPE FLAPS TO RADIAL GATES OF UJJANI DAM

Ujjani dam is one of the major irrigation dams, constructed across river Bhima near village Ujjani of Madha Taluka in Solapur disrtrict of Maharashtra. For surplussing the flood water, an ogee shaped spillway of 602 m length is provided with 41 no. of radial gates of 12m x 6.5 m size. The important pilgrimage town Pandharpur is situated on downstream side of the dam and is always under the threat of floods due to releases from Ujjani dam. In order to mitigate the floods, a fixed type flap of 0.5 m size to the existing radial gate is conceived resulting increase in flood absorption capacity. However, this addition will cause additional stresses in the gate as well as embedded parts in the piers. It is essential to analyse the extent of over stressing of horizontal and vertical anchorages due to increase in head and eccentricity by analytical method and compare it with the other methods like; Photo Elastic Analysis and Finite Element method. The present article describes the conformity of these methods and their use in the design of flaps.
