Conventional machining systems rely heavily on human operators for monitoring the process. With advanced signal processing techniques for automated tool wear monitoring, un-manned machining to improve production and reliability, and to increase machine tool life, can be realised. Vibration analysis with fast wavelet algorithm can process the on-line data with very flexible resolution, and monitor the tool wear feature of the vibration components, thus provides a simple method for the practical implementation of real-time tool wear monitoring. Its application also can be extended to on-line surface quality monitoring and workpiece property analysis. This is the basis for future research.
