Diabetes and Birth Defects

Despite considerable advances in the management of the pregnancy complicated by diabetes, the rate of congenital malformations has not changed in several decades. The frequency of these malformations, estimated at 6 to 10%, represents a three to five fold increase over the rate seen in the general population. Congenital malformations and their sequelae represent a serious social and financial burden to both the individual family and the society at large. The multifactorial processes associated with fuel-medicated teratogenesis and potential therapeutic options are reviewed.
