An innovative non-slagging spouting-cyclone combustor (SCC) with two-stage combustion, organized in perpendicularly vortexing flows, is developed for clean coal combustion in utility boiler furnaces, small-size industrial furnaces and domestic furnaces. The cold model test, the computer simulation and the full-scale combustion test give some encouraging results. A simplest form of SCC, the spouting combustion, or low-temperature-vortex (LTV) combustion technology has been successfully used to retrofit a boiler furnace with steam output of 65 T/h in a power station in Northeast China for burning lignite with high moisture and ash content and very low heating value. The steam output was raised to 100-120% of the nominal one, and the 300-400 pm powdered coal can be burned stably without using oil. The noise and dust pollution, erosion and corrosion have remarkably been reduced.
