The ability of activated carbon (AC) to remove SO{sub}2 and NO{sub}X from gaseous streams is investigated. Essentially, the influence of water present in AC and in gas streams on the capture of SO{sub}2 and NO{sub}X is studied. Gases were brought into contact with AC, and the mass of sample was measured. The mass gain was much greater for SO{sub}2 than for H{sub}2O or NO{sub}X. The previous contact of AC with H{sub}2O and/or SO{sub}2 as a rule increased the subsequent capture of SO{sub}2 and NO{sub}X. For NO{sub}X it depended strongly on the amount of water adsorbed by AC. The detrimental effect of a high H{sub}2O content in the material was mitigated by SO{sub}2. The contact of AC with SO, produced a more significant mass increase due to NO{sub}X. The effect weakened by outgassing AC and by drying "the SO{sub}2, and NO{sub}X streams.
