Porphyromonas gingivalis has been recognized as a major periodontal pathogen in various types of periodontal diseases. Fimbriae of P. gingivalis are thought to be one of the virulence factors.The subunit proteins of fimbriae FimA is encoded by the finA gene. The fmA gene was classified into five types Type I-V. Recently some reports have revealed the existence of untypeable P. gingivalis strains. We obtained 3 untypeable strains of P. gingivalis out of a total of 115 isolates of P. gingivalis from severe periodontal patients n=11. The aim of this study was to compare the biological characteristics including SDS-PAGE of whole cell extract, cell-surface hydrophobicity, hemagglutination activity, co-aggregation ability in the 3 untypeable P. gingivalis strains to those of typeable P. gingivalis isolates.
