Contaminated sediments represent a considerable environmental problem connected with the port management: dredging activity is necessary to maintain shipping depth and, on the other hand, disposal in sea or landfilling is restricted more and more due to new stringent regulations. Naples port, according to its intense shipping and industrial activities, is one of the most important in Italy. As consequence of these activities several pollutants are accumulated in the bottom sediments. This paper reports the results of the investigations carried out on the sediments dredged in some areas of the Naples bay during the last 10 years. Furthermore the state of contamination is pointed out using the PCA (Principal Component Analysis) method.
