摘要

The world community is faced with risks from a variety of contaminants and residuals in the underlying sediments. Characterization of these sediments includes an evaluation of contaminant impacts to soil, sediment, surface water, and wildlife in support of human health and ecological risk characterization, fate and transport modeling and remedial decision making. Remedial considerations include active and non-active remedial technologies. To be considered are the risks, benefits, and disadvantages of natural processes relative to more active measures such as capping or dredging. Experience has shown that the remedial responses selected for a contaminated sediment project must be such that they will reduce human and ecological risk to acceptable levels in a technically sound and cost-effective manner and provide a framework for enhancing ecological and human use values of the area.
