Air Force Plant 44 in Tucson, Arizona is owned by the Air Force and operated by Raytheon Missile Systems Company. A joint Air Force/Raytheon Pollution Prevention Team operates at AFP 44 with the ultimate goal to minimize or eliminate the use of hazardous substances. The team works together to uncover new technologies and methods that will replace chemicals used in the plant's missile manufacturing facilities. A unique wastewater treatment method has been demonstrated as part of this program. This is electroflotation, a Russian technology that removes dispersed particles from liquid with gas bubbles generated by the electrolysis of water. A demonstration unit was built in the US, which removed organic emulsions from water and an operational unit was built which is being used successfully on a waterfall paint booth. Further additional validation testing was conducted on the operational unit for the removal of contaminants from caustic etch of aluminum rinsewater showing significant removal of total suspended solids.
